- Malaria, HIV/AIDS, TB, and respiratory, diarrhoeal, epidemic-prone and vaccine-preventable diseases are the leading causes of illness and death.
- Non-communicable diseases: There is also a growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including mental health disorders. Maternal and perinatal conditions also contribute to the high mortality

- The staple food is matoke (cooking bananas). Other food crops include cassava (manioc), sweet potatoes, white potatoes, yams, beans, peas, groundnuts (peanuts), cabbage, onions, pumpkins, and tomatoes. Some fruits, such as oranges, pawpaws (papayas), lemons, and pineapples, are also grown
